For Paul Smart, owner of Bristol based Paul Smart Transport Limited, haulage was in the blood. As a young boy Paul spent weekends and school holidays in the cab alongside his tipper driver dad, learning his future trade as together they hauled aggregates around the South West.
After completing an apprentiship as a vehicle technician, Paul spent ten years at Lex Group as a contracts manager in charge of over one thousand trucks and one hundred and twenty staff.
Paul began to work for himself in 1993 and from a humble beginning with just one old truck, today Paul Smart Transport Limited operates a fleet of thirty five vehicles from a four acre site close to Bristol Airport.
Paul Smart Transport Limited has expanded over recent years. The company now delivers asphalt, aggregates, sand, animal feed, recyclables and containers, and agricultural crops all over the UK.
Paul cites the size of vehicles used today and the distances as major changes he has seen over the years. Aggregates used to be delivered on six wheelers; now most materials are delivered on eight wheelers or artics and Paul regularly sends material hundreds of miles.
For the past two and a half years Paul has been researching the concept of using the walking floor trailer to discharge aggregates and asphalt. This research has taken Paul twice to the United States where they are already using walking floor trailers in this area and has resulted in Paul purchasing a trailer from the US for this application.
